Real Health Conversations
Real Health Conversations (Formerly Low-Carb Conversations) is hosted by Holly Jean Mullen, FNTP and features a variety of voices in the world of modern nutrition and health science, expressing many different points of view.

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Real Health Conversations Podcast our guest is Dr. Don Clum, a chiropractor and specialist in advanced metabolic nutrition. Dr. Clum has an integrative program for insulin resistance specifically focusing on diabetes, diabetes prevention, metabolic syndrome, weight loss resistance, obesity, and cardiometabolic issues.

We welcome Dr. Clum back to dive into a recent article published in Science Magazine, which calls into question decades of science around Alzheimer’s disease. An estimated 6.5 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2022 and the numbers keep rising. In this episode we talk about how Alzheimer’s is also known as type 3 diabetes. What is the purpose of plaque on the brain and how do they relate to insulin? The answers may surprise you. Alzheimer’s is a scary disease, but we are not powerless against it! The best part of this episode is learning lifestyle tips for prevention.

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week Leah and Holly take a deeper look into the question “Can I eat Carrots and Beetroot on Keto – are they too high in carbs/sugar?”

This, and similar questions along the lines of what can I/can’t I eat, are common when starting any new diet or exploring new eating habits. However, instead of worrying about the do’s and don’ts, perhaps a better question is not about the WHAT, but the WHY…

In this episode, Leah and Holly get started by looking at this question from a clinical perspective and chat a about nutrients – Nutrients are essential for our energy – life and growth, found in the foods we digest  and we often think about our Macronutrients – Protein, Carbs and Fats.  What we tend to not pay as much attention to is our micronutrients which are our vitamins and minerals. We (humans) can’t make vitamins and minerals and must obtain them through our food.

It’s our first episode with our new name “Real Health Conversations” and we wanted no one other than our long term friend and previous guest cohost Marty Kendall from Optimizing Nutrition.

Marty is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to nutrient dense foods and blood sugar regulation. Leah found a question in an online forum where someone was asking advise as to whether they could eat carrot and beetroot on a Keto diet. So the ladies ask Marty his thoughts and what do you think his response was? Tune in to find out this and more on Real Health Conversations.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

It’s not quite time for a Cohost Episode but Leah and Holly get together in this episode to announce some special changes coming to the podcast over the next few months. Let us know what you think?

The article this week looks at responses from multiple women about the stories we tell ourselves. Holly and Leah get deep and share that they share the same insecurities and thoughts still now even after years of doing “the work”. Maybe you can relate? Many people have their own internal battles happening so how can you win the war on your thoughts?

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week Holly and Leah are back for a Co-Host Episode. Recently, Holly was astonished by the health advice random strangers were giving people on social media forums. It got us thinking whether Social media is an appropriate place to a) Ask such health questions and b) try the advice given from strangers. Where should one go to ask such questions if Social Media is not the place?
