Real Health Conversations
Real Health Conversations (Formerly Low-Carb Conversations) is hosted by Holly Jean Mullen, FNTP and features a variety of voices in the world of modern nutrition and health science, expressing many different points of view.

New York Times bestselling Paleo cookbook author Elana Amsterdam and LSU college student and Paleo blogger Monica Bravo join our co-hosts Dietitian Cassie and Jimmy Moore today in Episode 96 of "Low-Carb Conversations With Jimmy Moore & Friends!"

Today is our final episode of 2013 for this fun-filled, opinion-driven look at all the latest health headlines of the day. We've seen some truly incredible shifts beginning to happen in the media coverage of topics like saturated fat, cholesterol, calories, low-carb and Paleo diets, and all the other popular topics you've come to expect from this show. While we still have a long ways to go to bring about genuine paradigm-shifting changes, we're getting there. And hopefully "Low-Carb Conversations" is helping to speed up that process just a bit. We're so very grateful to all those people who have chosen to help us continue to bring this show to you week after week throughout 2014. Special THANK YOU to those who have shown us their love and financial support in recent weeks, including June, Robert, Kathleen, Therese, Richard (BIG DONATION--THANK YOU!), James, Martha, and Charles. If you'd like to join these people in providing us funding to come back strong in a couple of months, then CLICK HERE to help us out. THANK YOU FOR YOU SUPPORT!

We had a fun time chatting about some of the truly amazing recent health headlines, including a suspicious new addiction study comparing Oreo cookies to cocaine, Grain Brain author Dr. David Perlmutter's appearance on The Dr. Oz Show last week promoting low-carb, high-fat diets, a new study by Dr. Mary Newport looking at the use of coconut oil for Alzheimer's disease, a misguided video fro a registered dietitian on About.com promoting lean meats for a low-carb diet, a new advertisement in Australia comparing drinking sugary soda to fat, the move to promote bariatric surgery for treating Type 2 diabetes, a positive op-ed piece in U.S. News & World Report on the Paleo diet, and a whole lot more! What a delightful time we have in this episode, so pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and let's talk about it!

Have you ever caught yourself watching a television show, reading a news story online or hearing an ad on the radio that just make you want to scream to the top of your lungs? That's kinda what we do here on this podcast every Friday when we take on all the latest health headlines out there making news--and making us mad! Yes, it can be quite maddening at times hearing the constant vilification of saturated fat, the heavy promotion of whole grains as healthy and an over-obsession on calories having any real meaning in the discussion of nutrition. But that's why "Low-Carb Conversations" is here to serve you each and every week. We have two amazing co-hosts who really know their stuff and combine their collective wisdom on diet and healthy living with two influential members of the online health community to share educated opinions about what all these things mean. Challenging those headlines that don't seem quite right and highlighting the good ones that do is the magic that makes this show happen. We'd love to keep doing this for you throughout 2014, so CLICK HERE if you would like to make a contribution towards keeping us on the air. THANK YOU FOR YOU SUPPORT!

Self-described "nutrition nerd" Brian Klein and cyclical ketogenic diet blogger Naomi Most join our co-hosts Dietitian Cassie and Jimmy Moore today in Episode 94 of "Low-Carb Conversations With Jimmy Moore & Friends!"

Where else can you hear educated opinions that match what you believe about the health headlines of the day than on this podcast? If you're like most of us in the low-carb community, it probably drives you nuts when you see a crazy headline claiming that low-carb, high-fat diets are killing you because you're living proof that this is simply not true. In fact, it could be argued that you are a million times healthier now than you were before you started low-carb, Paleo, primal and real food living. This is why we think "Low-Carb Conversations" is so important to stay on the air to directly challenge the negative headlines and to shine a light on those headlines that are showing how this message is penetrating into our culture. If you want to see this show continue to take on the conventional wisdom of the day, then CLICK HERE to financially support the work we are doing. THANK YOU FOR YOU SUPPORT!

Paleo, gluten-free, low-carb blogger Carol Lovett and professional chef and health blogger Camille Macres join our co-hosts Dietitian Cassie and Jimmy Moore today in Episode 90 of "Low-Carb Conversations With Jimmy Moore & Friends!"

It just feels right having this show back on the air again over the past few weeks dissecting all the latest health headlines out there in the mainstream world to see what kind of messages they are communicating with an unsuspecting public. Yes, we are the great exception to the rule when it comes to reading through the typical editorializing that goes on even in the midst of reporting on scientific studies on diet and health. Make no mistake about it, conventional wisdom on these subjects still rules the day--but we're getting closer and closer to making the messages we communicate on this podcast a part of the debate of ideas...and that's exciting stuff! We need podcasts like "Low-Carb Conversations" to solidify in the minds of listeners what to think about these critical issues that are important to attaining a healthy lifestyle so that they can keep sharing this alternative information to the people within their circle of friends and family who need to hear it the most.

No matter how much you know and believe in the concepts of healthy low-carb, Paleo living, it's nice to have a place of solace, encouragement and reinforcement to help you in this journey. If you'd like to see that continue, then won't you consider making a donation to help us continue to provide a weekly critical look at the health headlines that dominate our modern-day culture. We've been incredibly grateful for the support that so many of you have given us in the past couple of months, but we have tens of thousands more listeners who could help us keep going strong in the months and years to come if most of you shared a very modest donation as little as $5 to carry on. If you like the show and want to keep hearing more of it, isn't it worth a small seed of investment now to reap big dividends in changed lives down the road? CLICK HERE if you want to help us make that dream a reality. THANK YOU FOR YOU SUPPORT!

Jimmy and Dietitian Cassie are thrilled to welcome in a dynamic couple of beautiful peeps to join them in the studio today (it's "Jimmy and the babes"!), including Paleo, gluten-free, low-carb blogger Carol Lovett from the "Ditch The Wheat" blog (author of the Paleo-friendly e-cookbook Indulge: 70 Grain-Free Desserts) as well as professional chef and health blogger Camille Macres from the "Recipe Rx" blog (author of the creatively-titled Paleogasm: 150 Grain, Dairy and Sugar-free Recipes That Will Leave You Totally Satisfied and Begging for More). Listen in as they take on some fascinating health topics, including the sudden rise in Type 2 diabetes that has hit 114 million people in the (rice-loving!) country of China, a confused health advocacy specialist on the subject of carbohydrates, a critical blog post of Paleo, low-carb and primal living with specific digs at Mark Sisson and several others from the ancestral community, a recent paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that calls for an end to the diet debates (wishful thinking!), a mainstream column knocking the health halo off of smoothies and fruit juice (FINALLY!), the absurdity of the cholesterol-lowering food products that are marketed to consumers these days, and so much more! This is a fun episode today that we KNOW you're gonna love, so pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and let's talk!

CAMILLE'S BLAT OMELET WITH GARLIC AIOLI RECIPE

Serves 2

BLAT, if you’re not familiar, stands for BACON-LETTUCE-AVOCADO-TOMATO, and is typically an upgrade to the famous BLT sandwich. Here’s my take using eggs, glorious eggs! This is the best low-carb breakfast on the block.

6 eggs
1/4 cup chopped green onions
Butter, for cooking eggs
6 slices applewood smoked bacon, cooked crispy and crumbled
2 avocados, diced small
1/2 cup grape tomatoes, cut in half
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon Spike or other seasoned salt
1 cup arugula
2 tablespoons Balsamic Reduction (Trader Joe’s and some other markets carry a Balsamic Glaze if you want to skip this step)

Heat a 9-10 inch skillet on medium-high heat. Add about a teaspoon of butter. Whisk eggs in a medium bowl. Add half of the eggs to the hot pan and sprinkle with green onion, salt, and pepper. Turn to low and cover, allowing the steam to cook the top of the egg. You can get crazy and try to flip it, but you risk breaking it. Toss avocado, tomatoes, and arugula with lemon and seasoned salt. When top cooked, remove from pan and add bacon, and salad. Fold over, slice in half, drizzle with balsamic glaze and serve with a dollop of aioli.

And in addition to our fabulous co-hosts Jimmy and Dietitian Cassie, we are pleased to welcome two highly-qualified guests to take on such a complex topic--returning guest friend and medical school student Kris Gunnars from the "Authority Nutrition" blog and registered dietitian Paul Kriegler from "Lifetime WeightLoss." Listen to them take on these cholesterol health headlines along with Jimmy and Dietitian Cassie, including why cholesterol and saturated fat are not the enemy, the role of statin medications in the treatment of cholesterol, the shocking information about cholesterol communicated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in a 2013 pamphlet, the new knowledge we have about cholesterol, former President George W. Bush's recent blocked artery story, Paul's column on the real deal on lipids, Kris' column on cholesterol and nutrition myths that pervade our culture and more! So pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and let's talk!

Because we are a listener-supported show, we need the donations of listeners like YOU to help keep it going. While we've been gone, we appreciate all the fabulous donations sent in by our faithful listeners, including Shaun, Nicole, Kenneth, Patricia, Kim, Carol, David, Barbara, Margaret, Nancy, John, Kari, Elaine, Karen, Philip, Regina, Nadine, Wendy, Greg, Linda, Penny, Gillian, Janice, Sheila and Jeff! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!! While a lot of people are loving the weekly look at the health headlines of the day from a real food, low-carb, Paleo outlook we provide on this podcast, the reality is we're not getting the financial support we need to keep this show on the air as often as we'd like. If you've been positively impacted by "Low-Carb Conversations," then consider making a donation of ANY size to help us stay on the air. Jimmy and Dietitian Cassie DEFINITELY want the show to stay alive and continue providing a sane voice of reason in response to the absurdity that tends to happen with health headlines. CLICK HERE if you want to keep hearing "Low-Carb Conversations" in the months and years to come! Your donation is greatly appreciated.
