Real Health Conversations
Real Health Conversations (Formerly Low-Carb Conversations) is hosted by Holly Jean Mullen, FNTP and features a variety of voices in the world of modern nutrition and health science, expressing many different points of view.

This week we have a masterclass on digestion in our Foundations Series.

The digestive system plays a major role in your overall health as it brings nutrients to your body. Without good digestive health, you will experience a host of uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, and more. Additionally, you may also get a lack of proper nutrition from the food you eat, which can negatively impact your health and wellbeing. This is why digestive health is so important.

So, how do you keep your digestive system healthy? Listen to find out!

Show your lymph some love! Dayna Marsh joins the show today to talk about the benefits of lymphatic massage. Dayna is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and owner of Body Therapy Salt Lake, in Salt Lake City, UT. She offers in person massage therapy sessions and in person or virtual nutritional therapy services.

Lymph, is like blood in that they both are liquids circulating in the body. Unlike red blood’s circular, pumped by the heart movement, lymph moves just one way: out. However, lymph has no organ pump so it’s up to individuals to help move it along.

Lymph is the body’s liquid trash can. It picks up waste products formed from all the chemical reactions needed to keep people alive, ushering them out of the body.

Besides the congested head, puffy eyes, and swollen ankles that signal lymphatic dysfunction, there are more signs and symptoms of lymph blockages that may not be as obvious as fluid buildup. However, they can be severe lymph-related issues just the same. These signs include:

  • Bloated stomach or extremities
  • Brain fog
  • Cellulite
  • Chronic headaches
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Constipation
  • Eczema
  • Excessive sweating
  • Mucus and phlegm production
  • Painful and hard swellings (especially in armpits, groin area, and neck)
  • Sluggishness
  • Stiff or painful joints

Key takeaway from this episode: If you have one or more of these signs of lymphatic blockage, you can’t eliminate toxins, and you’d benefit from supporting your lymphatic system with massage and a variety of other techniques.

“We are suffering unnecessarily because our physical bodies are out of balance.” Dr. Vora

Our guest this week is Dr. Ellen Vora, a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher, and she is the author of The Anatomy of Anxiety. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University.

It’s normal to occasionally experience anxiety, such as when we’re faced with a high-stakes meeting, a stressed-out boss, or a conflict with a colleague. But according to the National Institute of Mental Health, in any given year, 19% of U.S. adults are suffering from an anxiety disorder, and 31% will deal with a disorder at least once in their lifetime.

Dr. Vora explains false anxiety – avoidable anxiety, causes real suffering but can have a straight forward, physical basis. When anxious, we tend to get trapped in false or limited ways of thinking – not that the feelings we are experiencing aren’t real or valid. However, these thought patterns create a debilitating negative spiral that can take over our lives by convincing us of impending doom and further exacerbating our sense of helplessness. Dr. Vora shares her tips to learn how to translate anxious feelings into purposeful action.

It may be small, but your thyroid is a mighty organ that is responsible for many important functions that can make a huge difference in your health. Metabolism, hormones, digestion, brain, and so much more are all affected by how well (or not) the thyroid is functioning. When the thyroid is not working well, you may feel pretty miserable. Thyroid disorders are common, affecting over 20 million Americans every year, and even more common in women (1 in 8 women will have a thyroid disorder at some point in life).

There is SO much information about food and exercise circling about, and it’s often conflicting or confusing. Perhaps you’ve tried a diet and failed, started an exercise routine and stopped, lost weight and then gained it back. I can relate because I’ve done all of those things.”

Who can relate? I sure can. Our guest today is Lindsay Young a certified transformational nutrition coach and strength and conditioning coach, a business owner, a wife, and a busy mom of 3 and she has mastered the balancing act of taking care of herself and her health as well as all of her other responsibilities. By including herself in her list of priorities, she is able to easily say no to the things that don’t fit the vision she has for herself, her family, and her life. In this episode, she breaks it down for us and how we can do the same.

As you know, as we age our bodies change – and what has always worked for us, might not always work – and the frustration comes from the trying to figure out the next thing that will work for us. Did you know that managing blood sugar could be the silver bullet to so many health challenges, as well as a huge obstacle for managing consistency? Lindsay explains how our blood sugar controls hormones and hunger cues and could be sabotaging your progress.

If you have been in a health rut or are burnt out on striving but falling short from thriving, this episode might be just the spark of inspiration you need to look at it with a different perspective.

Home is a place that should be safe and comfortable, not the place we want to associate as a source of health issues and potential problems.

However, the truth is out – your home environments could be negatively affecting you and your family’s health. Luckily, there are solutions! There are ways to minimize exposure or avoid the risk altogether.

In this episode I am presenting directly from my FREE Healthy Home Guide that I created just for you. I’ve taken all of the questions I’ve heard over the years – What is Toxic Load? How can I tell if I’m (or my children/family) are being negatively affected by environmental toxins? Where/How do I get started with cleaning up our home environment?

I have been listening!!! I hear you. I know you know this is important, I know it has been in the back of your mind, on your to-do list, for quite some time. Getting started is the hardest part so I’m going to make this really easy for you. This is not a daunting task when you have your plan. Overwhelm is not even an option when you see how simply I break it down for you. You are going to feel so much better knowing that you are taking pro-active steps to clean up your home environment. It is better to be empowered with knowledge, so you can make healthier and informed decisions, than to be unaware of the risks.

With each hazard, there are actions you can take to help fix the issue. You don’t have to do everything at once! A simple place to start is by choosing to commit to addressing one area of your home each month. Another way is to simply replace items with healthier and safer choices as needed – we call this the ditch and switch!

I also recommend starting with the items and products you use most. These are the things you use daily or frequently, and the chemical and toxic load adds quickly. By starting here, people often see the most benefit the fastest.

Dr. Peter McCullough is a practicing cardiologist with over 30 years of medical experience. He is a clinical scholar, frequent news contributor, AND, as a leading expert on cardiovascular medicine, Dr. McCullough has been outspoken, sounding alarm bells about the heart-related risks he believes could be attributed to mRNA technology, including myocarditis and adverse reactions in high endurance athletes.

There are many questions parents have, that are going unanswered or with answers that can feel like gaslighting. Dr. McCullough holds nothing back in this interview as we have a truly bold conversation about topics that are being aggressively censored from the internet.

Our guest today is Dr. Lucy Burns. Dr. Lucy  is a GP and a lifestyle medicine physician. And has a an online platform, program called Real life Medicine  and a podcast called The Real Health and Weight Loss podcast with her business partner Dr. Mary Barson.

Medical hypnosis can be an effective clinical tool for the relief of physical symptoms. Hypnosis is a voluntary, generally safe, and potentially effective process that involves a person and a therapist working together to bring about positive changes.

Practitioners may be able to use hypnosis to help people bring about both psychological and physiological change in three main ways:

  • using mental imagery to help a person visualize themselves accomplishing their goals
  • presenting ideas or suggestions that are compatible with what a person desires
  • unconscious exploring to identify whether past events or experiences are causing a personal problem in making positive changes
  • Individuals can also learn the technique of self-hypnosis as self-hypnosis is similar to mindfulness techniques and meditation.

Our guest today is Feather Berkower, a licensed clinical social worker with a Master’s of Social Welfare from UC Berkeley. She has been a leader in child sexual abuse prevention since 1985 and has educated nearly one-hundred fifty thousand schoolchildren, parents and youth professionals. Her well-regarded workshop, Parenting Safe Children, empowers adults to keep children safe from sexual assault. Feather co-authored Off Limits, a parenting book that will change the way you think about keeping children safe. It is available on her website at parentingsafechildren.com

Sexual abuse of children is a difficult topic to discuss, but that is why these conversations need to take place. The manipulative behaviors perpetrators use to set children up for sexual abuse are designed to be subtle and often appear innocent. As parents, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our children. What we, many parents, don’t know or realize, is that in these unsettling situations, the perpetrators are also working the parents. Abusers will often groom a family, and not just a child.

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Real Health Conversations Podcast Holly chats with guest Dr. Caroline of Native Sun Nutrition & Functional Medicine Center

Dr. Caroline Williams is a Chiropractic Physician and owner of Native Sun Nutrition & Functional Medicine Center in Las Vegas.  Since 2001 she has been working with patients holistically to determine the cause of dysfunction whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or chemical.

Unlike supplements, photo-biomodulation (PBM), also known as phototherapy, helps the body repair cells and tissue by using a light source of a specific wavelength. This type of therapy has excellent efficacy in wound healing and pain relief. Dr. Caroline and I specifically talk about stem cells and glutathione in terms of light therapy. We talk about, how in our increasingly toxic world, it is vital to our health to ensure our bodies are properly detoxing. Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant and primary antioxidant for detoxification. Stem cells can help to lower inflammation, regulate the immune system, and regenerate damaged or diseased tissue in your body. By allowing tissue repair and reduced inflammation, stem cell therapy can help patients to live a healthier and better quality of life.

This week on the Real Health Conversations Podcast, Holly takes a look at the spiritual aspects of fasting. People of all walks of life are rediscovering the wisdom of fasting and feasting, the circadian rhythms of nature, and tuning in to the ancestral and spiritual aspects of primal health cycles.

This episode looks at fasting, specifically fasting from sugar and the so-called socially acceptable addictions – sugar and caffeine – and how those two crutches may be holding us back from the true health and spiritual transformations that many are seeking. Sugar, refined carbohydrates, ultra processed foods, and refined grains are at the root of inflammation and many disease pathways yet they are the hardest, most addictive foods to give up. Some call them addictions, others may see them as strongholds.

Fasting is a powerful tool to leverage a food addiction, or an over-reliance on foods for comfort, support, and sustenance. In this episode we look at the benefits of fasting for mental function, healing rejuvenation, and increased willpower. Fasting from sugar – the source of sickness for so many – is the first step in healing your body physically and spiritually.

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Real Health Conversations Podcast Leah and Holly take on coffee and cholesterol! Is the sophisticated sexiness of French Pressed coffee worth the alleged risk of negatively impacting cholesterol levels? This real health conversation was inspired by an article in the Huffington Post that very loosely links the two by inconclusive results from a weak study.

In this episode you’ll hear about why cholesterol is important and why we may not always have to be so concerned with lowering it. Cholesterol is necessary for healing and protection and not necessarily the bad guy it is made out to be.

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on Real Health Conversations, we take a look at the policies and regulations that govern the ingredients in our food (USA). The label “FDA Approved” is believed to be synonymous with tested and safe, but is that really the case?

Inspired by recent news headlines regarding a recent lawsuit against food company Mars, this episode looks deeper into the claims that Skittles candies were “unfit for human consumption” because of the presence of a “known toxin” called titanium dioxide.

An estimated 6.5 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2022 and the numbers keep rising. In this episode we talk about how Alzheimer’s is also known as type 3 diabetes. What is the purpose of plaque on the brain and how do they relate to insulin? The answers may surprise you. Alzheimer’s is a scary disease, but we are not powerless against it! The best part of this episode is learning lifestyle tips for prevention.

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week Leah and Holly take a deeper look into the question “Can I eat Carrots and Beetroot on Keto – are they too high in carbs/sugar?”

This, and similar questions along the lines of what can I/can’t I eat, are common when starting any new diet or exploring new eating habits. However, instead of worrying about the do’s and don’ts, perhaps a better question is not about the WHAT, but the WHY…

In this episode, Leah and Holly get started by looking at this question from a clinical perspective and chat a about nutrients – Nutrients are essential for our energy – life and growth, found in the foods we digest  and we often think about our Macronutrients – Protein, Carbs and Fats.  What we tend to not pay as much attention to is our micronutrients which are our vitamins and minerals. We (humans) can’t make vitamins and minerals and must obtain them through our food.

It’s our first episode with our new name “Real Health Conversations” and we wanted no one other than our long term friend and previous guest cohost Marty Kendall from Optimizing Nutrition.

Marty is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to nutrient dense foods and blood sugar regulation. Leah found a question in an online forum where someone was asking advise as to whether they could eat carrot and beetroot on a Keto diet. So the ladies ask Marty his thoughts and what do you think his response was? Tune in to find out this and more on Real Health Conversations.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week Holly and Leah are back for a Co-Host Episode. Recently, Holly was astonished by the health advice random strangers were giving people on social media forums. It got us thinking whether Social media is an appropriate place to a) Ask such health questions and b) try the advice given from strangers. Where should one go to ask such questions if Social Media is not the place?

Dr. Brizendine calls this process The Upgrade and argues that, if a woman knows how to step into her power and own her Upgrade, the second half of her life can be the better half.

Listen in as Leah and Dr Brizendine chat about the Transition (the period of time leading to The Upgrade). Dr Brizendine shares her research on tips on making The Transition to the Upgrade a better experience through mindset, nutrition, exercise, sleep and more. Dr Brizendine wishes for women experiencing this transition to experience more joy and serenity in their lives.

In this episode, Holly Jean and Leah review their favorite moments from most recent previous episodes.

Breathing, digestion, and stress management go hand-in-hand! This week’s article is a look at how belly breathing could be the key to better digestion. Deep belly breathing can actually massage the contents of the gut helping move food through the body for better elimination. Tune in to hear more about this and tips on a non cost method that is essential to life!

When we activate the diaphragm with breath, it creates a gentle massaging action for internal organs like the intestines and stomach. In doing so, it can reduce abdominal pain, urgency, bloating, and constipation.

Diaphragmatic breathing, or deep breathing, does not take much more effort than standard breathing and is one of the best things you can do to help with digestion.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

In this episode, Holly Jean and Leah chat with Katie Beecher, Internationally known Medical and Emotional Intuitive and Licensed Professional Counselor with over 30 years of experience. Katie’s mission is to help as many people as possible connect to their intuitions, find unconditional love and self acceptance.

Katie has a new book out called, Heal from Within: A Guidebook to Intuitive Wellness, and she shares how to connect to your intuition to help guide and identify your physical and emotional key health issues. Using the chakras as a framework, Katie describes how we should make friends with illness instead of seeing it as enemy = the body is always trying to communicate with us and symptoms are its language.

This episode provides practical action items and key tips for connecting and understanding your body. We wrap up with a conversation about medical gaslighting and why people are often told there is nothing wrong with them. Gaslighting further complicates and compounds the lack of body wisdom and intuition, which further disconnects people from listening to their bodies and inner voice.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

In this episode, Leah and Holly Jean discuss contributing factors of autoimmune disease. For decades, doctors and researchers believed that autoimmune conditions were genetic, or hereditary, and even a normal side effect of the aging process. But as conditions are rising at alarming rates and the age of diagnosis is getting younger and younger, researchers are asking questions and exploring the reasons for autoimmune onset.

We take a look at nutrition and lifestyle factors in this episode and discuss whether or not the western diet is to blame. If nutrition and diet play a role in developing autoimmune disease, is it possible to use therapeutic diets to reverse symptoms and diagnosis? We explore all this and more, in this episode!

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our guest this week is the leading authority on Nutrition and Human metabolism Dr. Cate Shanahan. A board-certified Family Physician with over 20 years of clinical experience, and NY Times bestselling author of The FatBurn Fix, Deep Nutrition and Food Rules, her expertise is fixing the underlying problems that cause metabolic damage and inflammation, leading to autoimmunity, weight gain, diabetes, cancer and accelerated aging processes.

Dr. Cate discusses her philosophy on Nutrition and how it is more about what you should eat rather than what you should not. From her own experience with a mysterious illness, she learned, first hand, exactly how much she was not taught in medical school when it comes to health and nutrition. When she radically changed her diet, she started to recover. After years of study, she discovered a terrifying truth: Almost all of us live in a kind of medical experiment that feeds Big Agriculture and the Hospital and Health Insurance systems, who all benefit the sicker we get.

Did you know 60% of most diets are devoid of nutrition and full of toxins? You can not make healthy cells without nutrients and, on top of that, toxins deplete our nutrient stores even further. Dr. Cate talks about how lack of nutrition and consumption of toxins not only leads us down a disease pathway, but also expedites the aging process. She discusses her formula for anti-aging as well as what oils to cook with and what happens when you eat rancid fats.

Be sure to visit the resources link below – Dr. Cate has included some helpful downloads for our listeners, including The FatBurn Factor worksheet, which includes a self-assessment quiz, Hypoglycemia Assessment Worksheet, Snacking Assessment Worksheet, and Hunger Assessment Worksheet.

These resources are a useful introduction to the kinds of tools Dr. Cate uses in her own practice and that she built into the programs described in Deep Nutrition and The FATBURN Fix. By reading those books, you’ll be able to best exploit these tools to improve your metabolism and track its improvement.
You’ll be benefitting from the same strategies and techniques she has used to naturally optimize the health and performance of some of the top athletes in the world and thousands of patients who thought they would never be free of prescriptions.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our guest this week is fellow FNTP Debbie Potts – Debbie is NASM Trainer, Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, health detective, athlete, and fellow podcaster.

In this episode, Debbie shares her insights and personal experiences as we discuss how low-carb and high-fat diets impact athletic performance, especially when it comes to endurance athletes.

Keeping with the athletic theme, we move on to talking about when and how to eat to fuel a workout. With so much “general” advice out there, we talk about the importance of bio-individuality and how listening to your body is the only way to find out the “right” way for you and your body needs.

This episode is for the occasional exerciser and the gym rat alike. Enjoy!

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our Guest this week is Dr Ken Berry. Dr Ken is a Board Certified Family Physician and Fellow in The American Academy of Family Physicians. He has  been practicing Family Medicine in rural Tennessee for over a decade, and has seen over 20,000 patients in his career so far. You might know him from his popular You Tube channel where he has videos about  low-carb/ketogenic/carnivore diets, intermittent fasting, thyroid health, hormone optimization and much more. He says he has declared all-out war on the epidemics of hyperinsulinemia, diabetes and obesity currently hurting our world, and hurting your health.

Dr. Berry leads us in a common sense discussion about health and the lies we are told by health care professionals. His personal transformation from a doctor who didn’t know any better when it came to nutrition, to his current role as a proper human diet nutrition advocate gives us insight and understanding into the reasons we are unhealthy as a nation and globally.

If you’ve been curious about intermittent fasting for weight loss or for skin health, you’ll want to hear this chat. The bottom line, insulin is a growth hormone! When insulin is present, things are growing – whether it’s your waistline or skin cells, it all stems from too much insulin or, chronic hyperinsulinemia. Listen in for Dr. Berry’s tips on how to get started with reducing insulin with intermittent fasting and meal spacing.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our guest today is Temple Stewart of The Ketogenic Nutritionist. Temple is a registered dietitian helping women lose weight with a ketogenic approach.

Dietician and Keto don’t normally go together but Temple shares her success with Keto and how the keto diet helped her reverse PCOS and improve fertility. Temple now helps other women improve their health, in sometimes hopeless situations, by using a therapeutic keto approach.

Our first article brings about an interesting discussion on the continuing rise in obesity and how the concerning issue is much deeper than any diet paradigm or as simple as the flawed calories in, calories out weight loss model. We then debunk a biased and un-researched article that refers to keto as a “disease promoting disaster”.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Have you been thinking about your health lately?

Perhaps it’s been weighing on your mind to put more focus on your health? Finally get “back on track” and take your nutrition and exercise seriously?

The very idea of changing your diet and hitting the gym can be daunting. Especially if you feel like you have a long way to go to reach your goals or if your schedule is already packed and you just don’t have time.

No matter where you are, we are all sold the same lie –  that nutrition is complicated and that health is time consuming and difficult to achieve. Lies!! Achieving vibrant health is really quite simple. Industry has just over complicated it.

It is not HARD to be healthy. Your body WANTS to be in good health.

EVERYTHING YOUR BODY DOES IS TO KEEP YOU ALIVE- that is its main objective!

All we have to do is not cause interference and give it the support it needs.

This episode is Holly Jean’s masterclass “Building Resilience: Take Control of Your Health & Boost Immunity”

In this episode, Holly shares the secrets to the FOUR RINGS OF HEALTH.

These aren’t really secrets, but it is information that you will not hear about on the news – it is information that is intentionally hidden from you. The news won’t teach you how to listen to your body or how to understand that symptoms have a root cause. The news won’t tell you that you already have everything you need to become your best, healthiest self. The television wants to scare you into believing that health comes from a pill or syringe or some trendy diet – I simply want to show you another way – a better way – a more effective way.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

We are back with our monthly Cohost Episode where we discuss guests from the past month:

#436 with Abby Durlewanger, House of Keto, #437 with Lucia Hawley, and #438 with Stephanie Reiter.

Then we have fun discussion common nutrition myths that are still taught in schools. We revisit the calories in, calories out model and ask the question, does too much protein cause kidney failure? Do you need to consume dairy to get enough calcium? Is the age-old advice that breakfast is the most important meal of the day accurate?

Tune in to listen to our discussion around all of these and more!

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our guest today is Stephanie Reiter, FNTP and Special Education Teacher. Stephanie joins us to share her personal insights and experiences in working with children in a school setting, witnessing, first hand, the impact of nutrition on attention and behavior.

Our conversation briefly takes the audience through the evolution of feeding children, starting 3000 years ago to modern times. How have school lunches changed since the turn of the 20th century? Is there room for improvement?

This is a timely back-to-school discussion that may get you thinking, and possibly inspire you to advocacy for change.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our guest today is Abby Durlewanger from House of Keto. Abby started keto in 2017 and had huge success and went on to inspire others including her own family. Abby motives others through her social media platform House of Keto showing delicious foods she is making, running challenges and more.

Abby shares her health journey and reveals how her experience with keto became the gift she wanted to give back to the world, including her own family. After years of trying low fat and low calorie diets, she came to discover that keto was the answer for her and the path that also allowed her to overcome food addiction and begin healing childhood trauma.

Once she learned about keto, and about how true health is achieved through proper nutrition, she could not continue to feed her family in a way she no longer believed in. She feeds herself, and her family, a proper human diet and she believes the negative press and comments provide the perfect opportunity to educate and inspire.

Episode 434

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Our guest today is Dr. Don Clum, a chiropractor and specialist in advanced metabolic nutrition. Dr. Clum has a cutting edge, integrative programs for insulin resistance specifically focusing on diabetes, diabetes prevention, metabolic syndrome, weight loss resistance, obesity, and cardiometabolic issues.

Don is a bit of a health rebel in the way he challenges the narrative and standard of care in his field and brings light, through first hand experience, to how the medical profession generally mishandles metabolic syndrome and related illnesses.

This episode has so much in it – eating windows, meal times and how the majority of people who practice intermittent fasting are doing so incorrectly in terms of metabolic health. We cover weight loss, blood sugar management, the importance of variance in routines for a thriving body.

We close out the episode Don talking about how to simplify autophagy to reap the benefits of cellular regeneration.

Episode 431

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the podcast Leah and Holly Jean are back with another Cohost Episode. They recap their favorite moments of the last 3 episodes before reviewing the latest health news.

First up Holly and Leah review an article about Doctors and why they might not be the best person to discuss nutrition with and they look at the pros and cons to this as well as suggest other practitioners who might be a better fit. Both Ladies agree gone are the days when you would only consult with your Doctor and having a team of practitioners to work with in their expert areas for your different needs is a wonderful approach.

They then review an article on managing food cravings. What is the difference between a food craving and a food wanting? Can food cravings be resolved with these simple suggestions? Are there any other methods you would add to the list of 12 that help you manage food cravings? Tune in to hear this and more!

This episode with Keith will surely provide insight and thought to this question, especially if you have not yet considered the way humans build their own cages. We discuss the power of questioning and the importance of learning how to use discernment and think critically when it comes to your health.

What came first, the emotion or the gut microbiome response? How does fear impact our brains and health? Keith shares his Seven Pillars for being an optimized human and how we can live free in a world that tries to keep us trapped within “the system”. Resilience is key but anti-fragility is ideal!

The show finishes off with gratitude, looking at the blessings of the past year.

Episode 424

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

On this episode we are joined by Jeanne David, Founder and CEO of Outer Aisle Gourmet. Jeanne initially created her cauliflower-based sandwich thins and pizza crusts to help her family remove processed carbs and sugars from their diet, while still enjoying comfort food classics like pizza and tacos.

Jeanne is passionate about bringing a low carb, grain and gluten-free bread alternative to those looking to improve health and maximize longevity by reducing chronic, systemic inflammation caused by overconsumption of processed carbohydrates and excess sugar. As a product of the “low fat” diet generation, Jeanne had an eye opening interaction with a life insurance actuary who referred to her generation as one that will “live short and die long”. It was then that she began to learn how inflammation plays is an underlying factor that plays a role in the 5 leading diseases – diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.

Research suggests that taking out refined, blood sugar spiking carbs like white bread and soda is good, but replacing them with fiber- and antioxidant-rich vegetables is even better. Outer Aisle Gourmet to the rescue – Toss the bread, use Cauliflower Instead!

Episode 421

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Barrett, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

In this episode, Leah and Holly Jean enjoy a down to earth discussion with Jenn Kautsch. Jenn is the founder of SoberSis, a like-minded community of women who are renegotiating their relationship with alcohol w/o labels, shame, judgment or rules. Jenn supports women through practical tools and connection while breaking the wine o’clock habit and she does not hold back in this episode – we talk about all the feels, the mixed emotions, the tips and the tricks!

Between 2019 into 2020, reports of women binge drinking rose amid the pandemic. Now many of those women, particularly mothers, say they’re reevaluating their relationship with alcohol in hopes to put an end to the, potentially dangerous, trend.

We’ve all seen the memes floating around – joking about how “mommy needs her juice”, and while it may start as all fun and games, many women are discovering that the ritual of unwinding and relaxing with a drink turns into a slippery slope of needing a drink to cope with stress. If you have been questioning your relationship with alcohol, or curious about breaking free from that detox-to-retox cycle, this is the episode for you!

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.
