Episode 402

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

Carlee Hayes is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and the Lead Dietitian at NutriSense, a company that leverages continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology and data to prevent disease and improve health span. With an extensive background in nutrition counseling, weight management, and metabolic health, Carlee is on a mission to stop preventable disease and help people live their healthiest lives.

Conversations around blood sugar dysregulation and blood sugar balancing are important because blood sugar affects all aspects of human physiology. Inflammation and disrupted hormones caused by high blood sugar directly contribute to specific diseases and conditions, including diabetes, PCOS, leaky gut, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer.

What factors are most important in weight loss – calorie restriction or blood sugar regulation?

In this episode we explore that question with with Carlee. We also acknowledge that there is shift happening in health and nutrition, towards a more functional, bio-individual approach and how only YOUR body can tell you what is best for YOUR health. Using a CGM is one way to give yourself health clarity in health, removing some of the guess work that comes with lack of data.

If you’ve ever wondered, how many carbs can YOUR body handle eating before spiking blood glucose? How your workouts impact your blood sugar? Your blood sugar patterns during fasting windows? A CGM can provide you with the data to answer those questions.

When you sign up with Nutrisense, all plans include complimentary dietitian support. Data can be tricky so the Nutrisense dietitians are trained to work with you to help you understand the results. No matter with dietary lifestyle you follow, a CGM can help you meet your health goals with real time, real life DATA support.

Episode 399

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Podcast, Leah and Amber chat with Marty Kendall from Optimising Nutrition. If you are a long time listener then you will recognize Marty’s name as he has been on the podcast a few times – even as a Co-Host!

Marty discusses his new project: Data-Driven Fasting. DDF revolves around the concept of using your Blood Glucose as a fuel gauge. You just wait until your Blood Glucose level is below your personalised trigger so you know you actually need to refuel. As you chase a lower pre-meal blood sugar trigger, the fat loss follows.

  • Join DDF to receive a 145-page manual and baselining sheet.
  • The next challenge starts November 21, 2020 or  January 2,  2021.

Marty has a new book called Big Fat Keto Lies  which is a compilation of his learnings from his adventures in low carb and keto land.  Designed to help people who might have stalled on their journey, Marty busts some lies in the Keto world by explaining common misconceptions like why eating too fat much might not be a good thing.

In this episode we look at two lies:

  •  #7 Fasting for longer is better
  •  #9 Calories Don’t count

Is fasting for longer hours better for you? Do you think Calories don’t count? Tune in to hear this and more.

Kiran has a background in research and has been at the forefront of designing clinical trials for the supplement industry. His company, Microbiome Labs, is dedicated to continued research on the microbiome, as well as providing research based probiotics and other supplements to practitioners. In this episode we talk with Kiran about the importance of a balanced and healthy microbiome (gut bugs!) and how that relates to our immune system and ability to fight off all forms of pathogens from viruses and bacteria to other bugs. We also talk about the connection between gut health and gut microbiome and how that impacts the oral and skin microbiome. Episode 396

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

On this episode Leah, Holly Jean, and Amber catch up and recap the amazing guests we’ve had on over the last month.

Then the discussion shifts to the importance of self care and what it means to them. Self-care is a popular buzz word, but what do people really think when they think of taking time for self-care. Or, perhaps a better question is, how many people make an effort to actually prioritize self-care?

On this episode our hosts explore the expectations and realities of what self-care looks like. They also share their personal tips for self care. Here is a hint: Self-care is not just an act of luxury, taking bubble baths, or pampering yourself.  Tune in to find out how to find rest and restoration in daily activities and practices – no day spa necessary.

Articles Discussed:

  • Why your self-care isn’t working
    • “Self-care is just one fraction of the broader concept of self-love. Self-love includes, but is not limited to, recognizing your self-worth, being kind toward yourself, and fostering your self-growth throughout the course of your life. If your self-care strategies are not sticking, it may be because you are lacking the foundation of self-love.”
  • It’s time to redefine self-care
    • “Self-care is anything your future self will thank your present self for doing”

Ready to show yourself some self-love this fall? Join Holly Jean in her annual group cleanse, REVIVE: GI Reset.

The Fall 2020 GI-RESET is perfectly timed to support the circadian rhythms of your body and the naturally occurring processes of seasonal detoxification.

The REVIVE GI Reset program runs from Monday November 2 – Monday November 23. The focus is on gut healing and supporting seasonal detoxification.

This is the SELF Care RESET!

With the option to choose from different levels of participation, this is an accessible, online program designed to benefit anyone looking to make time for self-care, get back on track with nutrition, kick cravings, reduce inflammation, and provide an opportunity to revive and repair their bodies from the inside out.

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on Low Carb Conversations with FNTPs Leah, Holly Jean and Amber, the ladies are all together again for their monthly recap.

In this episode we chat about our guests this past month and give you a highlight reel of our favorite moments. We had some wonderful guests on with a range of topics. Leah and Amber interviewed Cynthia Thurlow and Dr. Eva Detko. They talked with Cynthia about her individualized approach to Intermittent Fasting and how to tailor it to your unique needs. There are so many adjustments you can make to find something that works for you. The following week we had Dr. Eva Detko on talking about our vagus nerve and how important it is for self regulating, immune function, digestion, and overall health and well-being. The vagus nerve is like a muscle and needs to be flexed regularly, so definitely check out that episode to learn more! Holly Jean and Leah chatted with Abel James, The Fat Burning Man, about a little bit of everything from new projects, to personal and health freedom, and why you should always listen to you mother!

In news this Episode Holly mentions an online Cleanse you can join. You can find out more details by reaching out to Holly here.

Leah, Amber and Holly Jean discuss a new man-made fat that is low in calories and isn’t absorbed by the body. Would you give this a try? Listen in to hear what we think. Also, Amber found a great article on why breathing is so important especially when wearing a face mask.

Episode 377

Our guest today is Abel James – New York Times Bestselling Author, Musician, and Online Creator and the man behind the Wild Diet. He’s host of the award-winning Fat-Burning Man Show, rated as Apple’s #1 Health Podcast in 8 countries with over 50 million downloads and 2000+ 5-star REVIEWS .

In this episode, Abel shares his shocking story of how western medicine almost killed him and the amazing ways in which proper nutrition brought him back to living in vibrant health. He reminds us that we don’t have to fear fat!

With so much conflicting and misinformation circulating in the news media, we have an interesting discussion around the ways in which tactics of divisiveness are used to control messages of true health through censorship and shadow banning. He stresses the importance of being able to express and be tolerant of different ideas.

Even though this episode was recorded in early May and we discuss current events, the conversation still has relevance, perhaps even more, still today. We hope you enjoy!

Episode Quote: “You can get more freedom by being healthy, and your freedom is taken away – your sovereignty, your ability to be your full, best self – is taken away when you don’t have your health.”

Your host, Dr. Eva Detko, became a health advocate through her own healing journey. Following a viral infection, she ended up bed-ridden with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The conventional approach had no solutions for her, so she tackled the task of finding the root cause of her condition.

She realized that the real reason her body had not been able to cope with that viral infection was that she had overstimulated her nervous system for many years — the viral infection was merely a trigger for her CFS and fibromyalgia. Once she had addressed her nervous system dysfunction, she was able to get her life back.

She has since helped hundreds of clients overcome complex health issues by helping them restore their autonomic nervous system balance, which is critical to healing from any chronic condition.

She’s here to help you by sharing what she learned.

The Mind, Body & Vagus Nerve Connection Summit will help you understand:
+ The location and many functions of the vagus nerve
+ How to measure vagal tone
+ Symptoms and root causes of vagus nerve dysfunction
+ The role of chronic stress and emotional trauma

+ How to strengthen vagus nerve function
+ Physical and mind-based approaches

Welcome to Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson, Holly Jean Barrett and Amber Horn, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.

This week on the Low Carb Conversations Podcast Leah and Amber interview Dr Eva Detko about the Vagus Nerve.

The Vagus Nerve is so important to our health as it touches so many of our major organs.  We have always known there is something pretty important about this nerve but Dr Eva takes us on a deeper dive.  We discuss how to stimulate our immunity (and there has never been a better time!) using the vagus nerve and can we also use the vagus nerve to help other issues like digestion?

Interested in learning more? Download Dr Eva’s Vagus Nerve 101 e-book. It’s free!

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve of the human autonomic nervous system. Its fibers connect to all of your body’s organs from the neck down (except the adrenal glands), making it the primary component of your parasympathetic nervous system.

Playing a key role in areas such as heart rate, breathing rate, gastrointestinal peristalsis, sweating, detoxification and more, optimal vagus nerve function is critical to maintaining one’s health and longevity.

Because low vagal tone has been linked to:
+ Chronic fatigue
+ Fibromyalgia
+ Heart disease
+ Diabetes
+ IBS/IBD/SIBO/leaky gut
+ Autoimmune conditions
+ Neurological conditions
+ Cancer
+ And more!

You simply CANNOT properly address health issues — like gut, immune system or brain disorders — WITHOUT optimizing vagus nerve function!

In this 12-page eGuide, you’ll find strategies to increase your vagal tone, plus facts on polyvagal theory, indications of low vagal tone and the connection between strong vagus function and a healthy immune system.

Episode 375

This week on the podcast Leah and Amber interview Cynthia Thurlow, fellow FNTP and Nurse Practitioner, Nutrition and Intermittent Fasting expert, and host of the Everyday Wellness Podcast.

We had such a great time nerding out with Cynthia about intermittent fasting. We really dove into who it’s beneficial for, what type of eating window works best. As well as how a long fast in times of uncertainty and stress is probably not the best thing for your health! We also had a great discussion about the best time to fast and how to truly listen to your body to find what works for you as an individual.

If you want to learn more about fasting, Cynthia has a Intermittent Fasting Guide on her website here, as well as an amazing TED talk for you to check out.
